Foreigners Accepted Invitation to Lithuania: Number of Tourists Rose Even During Off Season

2018-06-12

Promotion of Lithuanian tourism in London Underground stations, outdoor advertising in Riga and Tallinn, campaigns in UK travel magazines, Israeli daily newspapers, advertising campaign at Warsaw Airport, active positioning of Lithuania as an attractive destination for tourism in the digital environment: advertising campaign in online travel platform TripAdvisor, travel bookings in the Italian site of eDreams portal, as well as in one of the largest travel portals OPODO in Germany... State Department of Tourism is already recording positive results of the campaigns carried out in the priority markets of incoming tourism: according to the statistics of the first quarter of accommodation establishments, even before the start of the tourist season, i.e. in January, February and March, the number of foreign tourists grew by 7.7 percent. In total, more than a quarter of a million (267.9 thousand) foreigners traveled in Lithuania.

The top 10 of the main markets from which the most tourists, who have traveled in Lithuania with at least one stay, came during the first quarter of this year is as follows: Russia (43 thousand), Belarus (36 thousand), Latvia (29 thousand), Poland (25 thousand), Germany (18.9 thousand), Ukraine (18 thousand), United Kingdom (11 thousand), Estonia (10 thousand), Sweden (6.6 thousand), Norway (6.1 thousand).

The most optimistic indicator was the flow of tourists from Germany accommodated in Lithuania, which has grown by 25.3 percent! In general, the growth of the number of tourists from the EU countries during the first quarter of this year amounts to almost 10 %. A steady recovery in the Russian market can be observed as well: we have welcomed 14.9% more tourists from this country compared to the same period last year. Distant markets usually having the highest travel costs in our country, demonstrated growth as well: the flows from China rose by 23.4 percent, from Japan – by 15.3 percent, Israeli – by 5.7 percent.

„With these indicators we may start talking about the main challenge of Lithuanian tourism marketing – targeted reduction of seasonality. Last autumn and winter we carried out campaigns in the majority of our priority markets, encouraging to choose our country not only in the summer. The results of these campaigns have outstripped expectations. We can see that foreign tourists are increasingly choosing Lithuania for their travels during the off-season: during the first three months of this year the number of foreign tourists rose by 19 thousand. An interesting fact is that in the first quarter of this year, the growth of foreign tourists in Lithuania unexpectedly outstripped the growth of local tourists: the number of the latter grew by 6.9%. This shows that the possibilities of Lithuanian tourism in the winter and in early spring are discovered and appreciated not only by ourselves, because the trend of the recent years was that local tourists were traveling more actively in the first quarter of the year - their growth was higher than the growth of foreign tourists‘, pointed out the Director of the State Department of Tourism, Indrė Trakimaitė-Šeškuvienė.

In total, 546 thousand tourists stayed in Lithuanian accommodation establishments during the first quarter of this year, i.e. 7.3 percent more than in the same period last year. This number does not include tourists who have opted for accommodation in rural tourism homesteads and part of the tourists who stayed in the private sector.

The total of 2.9 million tourists, of which 1.55 million were foreigners and 1.37 million were locals, have traveled in Lithuania with at least one overnight stay last year. Tourism generated EUR 1.89 billion of income in 2017 (+9.3 percent more than in 2016). State Department of Tourism expects that the total growth of tourist flows in 2018 will be reaching 6-6.5 percent.
